What Is Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain occurs in the area of the spine known as the lumbar region. This region starts at the middle of the back and extends down toward the top of the buttocks. The pain felt is usually a symptom of a larger problem, such as herniated discs, spinal tumors, kidney infections, pelvic infections, ovarian disorders or pregnancy, which stretches the ligaments of the pelvis.

Treatment for lower back pain involves bed rest, applying ice daily and taking over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen. Physical therapy exercises may also be recommended to strengthen lower back muscles. Back surgery is usually given to patients with severe nerve damage due to herniated discs.
